Art and science intersect in the visually intriquing and not quite fully understood field of fractal geometry.
Early 20th century mathematicians were bothered by the “messy behaviour” of a few class of equations. When computers were applied to investigate further, only then did their ‘messiness’ explode to reveal beautifully structured worlds of exquisite detail and infinite extent.
Given that there are no straight lines in nature, it is thought by some that fractal geometry will become to our understanding of nature what the straight line is to our understanding of science and mathematics.
I like to experiment with equations and, in a manner similar to photography, look for a compositionally interesting image.
As in nature, the complexity and beauty of fractals is infinite.
